You need to know how to boil water to make it safe to drink. And, more important, you must know the reasons why. Water makes life go around. The water of rivers, streams and lakes is called fresh water. Deep aquifers underground hold ancient fossil water, which is really unique and pure. A salty version is in the ocean. A similar salty version is in your blood, which pumps through your heart and motors you along in your life. Water is in the makeup of every cell of your body, all of which mix and match to form the beauty that is you. Your life, itself, depends on water. Population pressure is increasing the demand for water and the supply is limited. Climate change is moving water around, dropping the levels of rivers and lakes and increasing the mass volume of the ocean. The continental aquifers of the world are shrinking. Whether you work with 10 people, 10000 people or just yourself, paying attention to mental health first aid has never been more important.
Once upon a time much of our water was clean. I remember drinking from streams and slate-lined wells. “Clean” for water means that it is made up of only two things, oxygen and hydrogen. Nothing else. Outside of a laboratory, water is no longer clean. All the stuff that goes down the toilet, all the stuff that gets put into the air and all the stuff that gets cut down with the forests, ends up in water. Some of the contamination gets cleaned out of the water during sewage treatment. You drink the rest. It looks clean. But it is not. It carries chlorine as an antiseptic, for starters. A reaction to a difficult life event, such as bereavement, can make mental health in the workplace higher on the agenda.
When a water main breaks in Canada due to frost, earthquakes or other reasons, bacteria contaminate the water. You will not be able to see them on any given day, but if there is a lot of bacteria and debris in the water, it becomes turbid and does not look clean. It becomes more like a thin soup. In warmer weather this soup thickens. This is not good for you, your children, your cats, your dogs, or any other household pet you might have, even a husband. There will be more boil water orders in North America and across the world because money is tight and the infrastructure of our towns and cities is crumbling. So when you get an official government boil water advisory, do not drink water from the tap. Do not even brush your teeth with it. Get a kettle and fill it. Then put it on the element and turn it on. Wait until the water begins to boil. Of course there is an old wives’ tale that “a watched pot never boils.” Not true! It does. Wait a minute or two more until the water in the kettle is at a good rolling boil. By this I mean that you can see large bubbles of air rise up and pop on the surface of the water. After three minutes of boiling, turn off the element and let the water cool down for use in drinking or cooking or brushing your teeth. If you are a manager then employee wellbeing is a subject that you will be aware of.
Boiling water like this causes the molecular structure of the water to rub itself together as if it were washing itself. All the filth gets dropped to the bottom of the kettle into a solid known as a precipitate. Sometimes this precipitate is white and caked, a chemical called calcium carbonate from hard water. It is fairly harmless. Sometimes the calcium is stained a brown colour, which means that there is iron in the precipitate. Throw away these droppings in the bottom of the kettle. Just drink the upper layers of water. It is cleaner. Discussing hr app can be a good way to alleviate a difficult situation.
Now for the bad news. Dirty water from a broken pipe has a good chance of having pathogenic bacteria in it. If you drink these bad boys you bring them inside your body. They prosper and replicate there. Viruses, such as the polio virus, might be in the water, too. There are many more pathogens out there to give you nightmares. Some can kill and others can maim. But boiling water destroys these pathogens. So learn how to boil water. It is a simple way of being safe and sound. And when I visit, use it to make me a good cup of tea. Boil the kettle. Warm the teapot. Add a spoon of loose tea for the pot and a spoon for every person who is drinking the tea. And for heaven’s sake, use a tea cosy. It’s the least I will expect.
